Whitesoats Sowing12

World Porridge Day is just around the corner - a day dedicated to everything porridge related. At White’s Oats we’re on a mission to share our love for porridge oats and bring some inspiration to breakfast tables everywhere.

What is World Porridge Day?

World Porridge Day is an annual event run by the Scottish charity Mary's Meals. Set up in 2009 in Argyll, Scotland Mary's Meals began World Porridge Day as a way to raise awareness and funds for starving children in developing countries.

When is World Porridge Day?

World Porridge day is an annual event that happens on the 10th October each year. This year, in 2023, it will land on a Tuesday - the perfect day to have a bowl of delicious porridge for breakfast!

Porridge Facts

  • Did you know that oats were one of the first cereals cultivated by man? They were used in ancient China and Greece, where the Greeks were the first to turn them into porridge.
  • Did you know that oats were introduced to the British Isles around 600AD?
  • Did you know In Scotland, farmers used to pour leftover porridge into a ‘porridge drawer’ at breakfast? They would leave it here to dry out, ready to be cut into slices and taken as an on-the-go lunchtime snack. Today, we’d much rather enjoy a granola bar or flapjack for a quick snack, but we appreciate their ingenuity!
  • Did you know the word porridge is UK slang for a prison sentence? Porridge was commonly used as prison breakfast for inmates in the British prison system during the 19th century and early 20th century so this is likely why.
  • Did you know that eating 3g of soluble fibre from oats a day may reduce the risk of heart disease? Even more reason to incorporate oats into your diet.
